How to Keep a Hammock Dry During Winter

Bildresultat för hammock winter

If you own a cotton or polyester hammock, keeping it dry during rainy or winter seasons might be one of your dreaded problems. A wet or damp hammock can be a reason for many problems like dark spots, mold and mildew infestation, and eventually, the weakening of the cloth. To keep your hammocks dry during wet seasons, follow these easy steps that can definitely save you several bucks in buying yet another hammock.

Clean, disinfect, and dry

Before putting your hammock away, be sure that you washed it properly to remove all the dirt that it got while it was being used outdoors. You can wash some usual type of hammocks in a washing machine and it be clean after 4-6 minutes. Always remember to read the description of the hammock first before popping it in the machine so you will know its washing instructions. Some hammocks cannot take the harsh process of being washed so they are the kinds that are supposed to be dry cleaned.

Disinfect the hammock by a disinfectant spray after it dries and leave it again on the air for a few minutes to let the disinfectant dry. It is important to make sure it is dry before locking it in a box because aside for the 100% possibility that it will stink, it can also be damaged horribly if it is wet or damp when stored.

For hammock stands, disassemble its pieces before putting it away. Do not attempt to wash it even if it’s terribly dirty. If it has rust, get rid of it by scraping it with a knife and then wipe it with a cloth.

Store in a safe box

Fold the hammock just as how you fold your clothes and tie its ropes around it to make a single small object. This can make the storing easier and it will only take a little space in the box. Use a box that is waterproof and cover it properly so no dust or water can get in. If you ever have to use a wicker storage box, be sure that it’s made of resin materials or it’s waterproof. If you place this box outdoors during the winter, cover it with a plastic outdoor space cover to shield it from rain.

Wrap the hammock stand pieces with a plastic before storing it inside the box to get extra protection.

Note: You can leave out your hammock fully assembled in the winter; but make sure that you cover it with a full-cloth plastic designed for outdoor use. Always read the hammock instruction first before leaving it outside in the cold to let you know about its materials fully withstanding the harsh weather.

My Friend also Bought an Hammock

We have covered in some detail in previous articles the many benefits of relaxing in a hammock, whether for a pleasant break in the day, or for a good night’s sleep on a sultry summer night. Many are the times, however when one might desire the weightless supported feeling of a hammock, in a more seated position or in a space too confined for a traditional hammock. Enter the hammock chair or hammock swing.  Easily supported by any sturdy ceiling, tree branch or overhead beam, a hanging chair provides much of the comfort of the hammock, without the spatial considerations.

Everything from the simple to the sublimely ridiculous, and from almost every hammock making country in the world. We have tried most of these out, and found many with intriguing qualities. The categories generally seen are the open woven variety hand crafted in the Nicaraguan and Mexican tradition, the Brazilian fabric type, and much more elaborate swings crafted with wooden arms and backs.  In this general survey we will describe and discuss the various pros and cons of the different types.

The Open Weave

This hanging chair is typical of Mexico and Nicaragua. It employs the same type of weaving that is characteristic of the hammocks.  The Mexican chairs use a thick #24 cord to make the bed, which is then supported by a wooden cross bar.  The Nicaraguan uses a medium gauge hammock cord.  The length of the bed and the width of the bar determine size and comfort.  Bars from 34″ to 47″ can be found.  The wider bar gives more shoulder length but soaks up more of the woven bed, and requires a larger space for hanging than the smaller sizes.  As a class these chairs are wildly comfortable, especially on a hot summer day.

The Cross Woven

The chairs of Brazil are the most stylish and attractive of the lot.  Although they do not allow the full body support of the open weave types, they are great, and great looking, afternoon hang outs.

The Air Chair

The first of the “contraption” style chairs is the Air Chair, also known as the Sky Chair and by a dozen other brand names.  These chairs are very comfortable, and generally have a foot rest that can be adjusted higher than the chair for great relaxation.  As for looks…ai yai yai!

Swings and Things

A host of swings, double swings, wave chairs, hanging basket chairs and other pieces of furniture that use suspension rather than legs and rockers to grace the front porch on a summer afternoon have been developed.  We will discuss them at greater length in future articles.Bildresultat för hammock image

  2. Depending on the type of roof, changes need to be made to the hook from which it hangs. For example, a concrete ceiling needs both a heavy-duty plug and a screw hook. While, on the other hand, a wooden beam requires a screw used on wood

Note: The heavy-duty plug must have a diameter of at least 10 millimeters.

  1. Sudden knocks can damage the acrylic dome. Further, it can lead to speedy wear, tear, and breakages. Thus while hanging the chair, it is wise to be careful to avoid knocks. Users are also advised not to hang bubble chairs near other pieces of furniture or walls.
